Air Brake System is a type of braking system used in large and heavy vehicles such as, buses, trailers, rolling stock and others. Air brake system uses compressed air to generate frictional force in order to stop the vehicle, the system of air brake consist of service brake, parking brake, control pedal and an air storage tank, air is produced to release parking brake and for service brake to work the air is released by pressing pedal through reservoir. Moreover the air compressor is used to build-up and maintain air pressure, it takes air from atmosphere by air filter and compressor is driven by the vehicle’s engine, either by belts and pulleys or shafts and gears.The reservoir is used to store the compressed air and when the brake pedal is depressed the air form reservoir is transmitted to all the brakes equally through a brake chamber. The air brakes are of two types that are disc brake and drum brake, also there are various components which are necessary for functioning for Air Brake System such as compressor, governor, tank, air dryer, foot valve, brake chamber, slack adjuster and other components. Furthermore the air brakes are mainly used vehicles such as trucks, buses and rolling stock (railway).

Air Brake System are mainly used in heavy vehicles to apply massive brake effort to stop such heavy vehicles, this gives vehicles excellent stopping power and ensures safety on roads. Air brakes are significantly more powerful when compared to hydraulic brakes and uses compressed air unlike the hydraulic oil. In addition to this advantage of air brakes over hydraulic brakes is that they can stop the vehicle safely even when there is considerable amount of leakage and this systems are easy to install on chassis and trailers as they are interconnected by pipes. These factors together are causing significant increase in demand of air brake system industry. However, higher cost of air brakes compared to hydraulic brakes, high maintenance and repair cost, frequent maintenance and special knowledge and skill require to operate vehicle equipped with air brake system can hinder the growth of market.

There is significant increase in production of heavy vehicles such as truck, buses and railways such as high speed railways or rolling stock because of increasing population, industrialization and service sector.
